That box sitting on your RV roof is basically a residential window unit crammed into a package that takes a beating from sun, rain, road vibration, and salt air. In Stuart and along the Treasure Coast, your rooftop AC runs 8-10 months a year. That's more wear than most RV owners in the northern states put on their units in a lifetime.
The most common failure we see is dirty condenser and evaporator coils. Florida's pollen, dust, and coastal salt pack those aluminum fins tight. When airflow drops, the compressor has to work twice as hard, and that's when capacitors blow, fan motors burn out, and compressors overheat. A $120 coil cleaning once a year can prevent a $500+ compressor failure down the line. We see this pattern play out constantly across Martin County.
Beyond coils, we deal with failed run capacitors (the #1 AC repair in Florida heat), seized fan motors, bad contactors, and thermostats that lose communication with the rooftop unit. According to Dometic's maintenance guide, coils should be cleaned at least annually. In our experience working in Stuart, twice a year is closer to what's actually needed if you're anywhere near the coast.
Nine times out of ten it's dirty coils or a weak capacitor. The compressor hums along but can't transfer heat because the coils are packed with debris. Or the capacitor has lost enough microfarads that the compressor can't fully engage. We test both on-site. Coil cleaning runs $120-180, capacitor swap is $150-220.
A failing start capacitor or a compressor drawing too many amps on startup. In Florida's 95+ degree heat, the compressor is already under heavy load. A weak capacitor can't give it the boost it needs, so it pulls too much current and trips the breaker. A hard start kit fixes this about 70% of the time for $120-175.
Bad run capacitor, failed contactor, or a locked-up compressor. We check amp draw on the compressor leads to tell you which one it is. If the compressor is seized, it might be time for a new unit. But a contactor or capacitor fix is usually under $220 and gets you back to cold air fast.
Fan motor bearings wearing out, a loose fan blade, or debris caught inside the shroud. Road vibration loosens things over time. We pull the shroud, inspect the fan assembly, and check motor bearings. A fan motor swap is $250-400. Sometimes it's just a loose screw and we tighten it for the cost of the service call.
Low refrigerant from a slow leak or restricted airflow from dirty coils. When the evaporator gets too cold because refrigerant pressure is off, moisture freezes on the fins. You've got to shut it off and let it thaw before we can properly diagnose. We'll check the charge level and look for leaks once it's clear.
Mold and mildew buildup on the evaporator coils and in the drain pan. Florida's humidity is the perfect breeding ground. A proper coil cleaning with an antimicrobial treatment kills the mold and eliminates the smell. We also check the condensate drain to make sure water isn't pooling inside the unit where it shouldn't be.
Every rooftop AC brand has its own layout, capacitor specs, and common failure points. Here's what we see most often on RVs across Stuart and Martin County.
Dometic is the most common rooftop AC brand we service. The Brisk II is the standard 13,500 BTU unit on most travel trailers and fifth wheels. The Penguin II is the low-profile version. The Blizzard NXT is their newer high-efficiency model. All three share similar capacitor and fan motor configurations. The Brisk II run capacitor is probably the single part we replace more than anything else in Stuart.
Coleman-Mach units are built by Airxcel and found on a lot of Class A and Class C motorhomes. The Mach 8 is their entry model, the Mach 15 is 15,000 BTU for larger coaches. These units use a slightly different capacitor arrangement than Dometic. The condenser fan motor on Coleman units tends to fail before the evaporator motor, which is the opposite of what we see on Dometic. We carry parts for all three models.
Advent Air units are the budget option you'll find on a lot of newer entry-level travel trailers. They're simpler to work on than Dometic or Coleman, but the parts quality is a step below. We see more thermostat communication issues with Advent units. The good news is parts are affordable and usually in stock at our suppliers in Stuart.
Furrion and GE are newer to the RV market but showing up on more factory builds. The Furrion Chill has a different control board layout. GE's ARC series is inverter-driven, which means variable speed compressor operation. Both require brand-specific diagnostic knowledge. We've been seeing more of these roll through Martin County on 2022+ model year RVs.
Call 772-280-3915 or request a quote online. Tell us what's going on - not blowing cold, tripping breakers, weird noises, ice on the coils. If you know the brand (it's on the shroud label), that helps us bring the right parts. We schedule same or next day across Stuart and Martin County.
Our tech climbs up, pulls the shroud, and checks everything - compressor amp draw, capacitor readings, coil condition, fan motors, contactors. You get a written quote with the exact problem and cost before we start any repairs. Most rooftop AC diagnostics take 20-30 minutes.
We carry capacitors, hard start kits, fan motors, contactors, and coil cleaning supplies on the truck. Most rooftop AC repairs are done in 1-2 hours. A compressor swap takes longer, but it's still done at your location. You're back to cold air the same day.

AC quit cooling on our fifth wheel right in the middle of July. Tech came out, pulled the shroud, and found a blown run capacitor plus coils that looked like they'd never been cleaned. Had it blowing cold again in about an hour. Couldn't believe how fast it was.
Our Coleman kept tripping the 30-amp breaker. Two other shops said we needed a new unit. Stuart RV Repair put a hard start kit on it for $150 and it's been running perfectly for three months now. Saved us over a thousand dollars.
Had a terrible musty smell every time the AC kicked on. Tech cleaned the coils, treated them for mold, and cleared a clogged drain line. Smell is completely gone and it's actually cooling better than it has in years. Should have done this a long time ago.
RV rooftop AC repairs in Stuart typically run $150-650 depending on the problem. A capacitor swap is $150-220. Fan motor replacement runs $250-400. A compressor replacement is $450-650. Coil cleaning is $120-180. We give you an exact written quote after diagnosing on-site before any work starts.
The top three causes we see in Stuart are dirty evaporator coils, a weak or failed run capacitor, and low refrigerant from a slow leak. Dirty coils are the most common since Florida dust, pollen, and salt air pack those fins fast. A coil cleaning alone fixes about 40% of the "running but not cooling" calls we get.
We do 95% of rooftop AC repairs right at your RV. Capacitors, fan motors, contactors, hard start kits, thermostats, and coil cleaning are all done on-site. The only time you'd need a shop is a major refrigerant system repair, and even that we can sometimes handle in the field with our recovery equipment.
In Florida, we recommend cleaning the coils once a year minimum. If you're camping near the coast in Stuart or Jensen Beach, the salt air packs the condenser fins faster. Twice a year isn't overkill for coastal RVers. Clean coils mean the compressor doesn't work as hard, which extends the life of the whole unit.
We work on all major brands: Dometic (Brisk II, Penguin II, Blizzard NXT), Coleman-Mach (Mach 8, Mach 10, Mach 15), Advent Air, ASA Electronics, Furrion, and GE. Dometic and Coleman make up about 85% of the rooftop units we service across Martin County.
A well-maintained RV rooftop AC lasts 8-12 years. In Florida's heat, where the unit runs 8-10 months a year, that number drops closer to 7-9 years without regular coil cleaning and capacitor checks. We see a lot of units in Stuart that die early because the coils were never cleaned. Annual maintenance adds years to the unit.
We handle all RV A/C and heating repairs - rooftop units, capacitors, furnaces, thermostats, and ductwork. If you've got multiple climate control issues, we can knock them all out in one visit across Stuart and the Treasure Coast.
We cover Martin, St. Lucie, and Palm Beach counties for all RV rooftop AC repairs. From Stuart and Palm City to Jensen Beach, Hobe Sound, and down to Jupiter.
