Electric Awning Motor Repair

Your electric awning won't move. Here's why.

RV with electric awning extended at a Treasure Coast campground

Electric RV awnings are great when they work. Press a button, the awning rolls out. Press it again, it rolls back up. But when the motor fails, you've got a 16-foot sheet of fabric stuck halfway out, and you can't drive anywhere until it's retracted. We get these calls every week in Stuart, especially after power surges during summer storms.

The motor system on an electric awning has three main components: the motor itself (a 12V DC unit mounted inside or alongside the roller tube), the controller board (which handles the logic for extend, retract, and auto-retract functions), and the limit switches (which tell the motor when to stop at full extension and full retraction). Any one of these can fail independently.

The controller board is actually the most common failure point we see, not the motor. Florida's humidity and power fluctuations from shore power issues cook the capacitors on those boards over time. A board replacement costs about half of what a full motor swap runs, and we carry the common Dometic and Carefree boards on the truck.

Common Motor Problems

6 electric awning motor issues we fix constantly.

01

"I press the button and nothing happens at all"

No sound, no movement. Start with the basics: check the fuse on the awning circuit (usually a 15A blade fuse in the 12V panel). If the fuse is good, the controller board is likely dead. We test voltage at the board and at the motor leads to pinpoint exactly where the power stops. A board swap fixes this 60% of the time.

02

"The motor hums but the awning won't move"

The motor is getting power but can't turn the roller tube. This usually means the internal gearbox has stripped or the motor bearings have seized. In Stuart's salt air, bearing corrosion is common on rigs parked near the Indian River or Hutchinson Island. Motor replacement is the fix at $350-600.

03

"The awning extends but won't retract"

The retract limit switch may have failed or lost its calibration. The controller board sends a "retract" signal, but if the switch doesn't respond, the motor doesn't know to run in reverse. We can recalibrate or replace limit switches on-site. This is one of the cheaper fixes at $150-250.

04

"The awning stopped in the middle and won't go either way"

Could be a thermal cutout on the motor (they overheat if you cycle them too fast), a dead controller board, or a broken wire in the harness that runs from the switch to the motor. We start by checking voltage at both ends and work backward. If it's stuck out and rain is coming, we'll manually crank it in first, then diagnose.

05

"The auto-retract wind sensor stopped working"

Dometic WeatherPro and Carefree Eclipse models have wind sensors that automatically retract the awning during gusts. The sensor module or its wiring to the controller board is the usual failure. In Florida, where afternoon storms blow up fast, a working wind sensor isn't a luxury - it saves you from ripped fabric and bent arms.

06

"The awning makes a grinding noise when it moves"

Grinding means metal on metal inside the motor or gearbox. The gear teeth are wearing down, and it's a matter of time before they strip completely. If you catch it early and the gears haven't fully stripped, sometimes lubrication buys you a few more months. But honestly, once it's grinding, replacement is the right call.

Brands We Service

Dometic, Carefree, Solera - we know the motors.

Each brand uses different motor designs, controller boards, and mounting configurations. Here's what we see most often in the Stuart and Martin County area, and what you should know about each system.

Dometic 9100 / 9200 Power Awning

The Dometic 9100 is the most common electric awning we service. The motor sits inside the roller tube on the left side (driver side). The controller board mounts behind a cover plate on the RV wall. These motors last about 6-8 years in Florida conditions before the brushes wear out. According to Dometic's technical specs, replacement motors are model-specific by awning length.

Dometic WeatherPro Power Awning

The WeatherPro is Dometic's premium electric awning with built-in wind and motion sensors. It auto-retracts during high winds and has LED lighting built into the roller tube. The motor and sensor module are integrated, so if the motor fails, you're replacing a more expensive assembly. But the sensor system saves awnings from storm damage constantly.

Carefree Eclipse / Travel'r

Carefree's electric awnings use an external motor mounted on the end cap rather than inside the roller tube. This actually makes them easier to access and replace. The Carefree Eclipse includes a wind sensor system similar to the WeatherPro. The Travel'r is their more basic electric model without auto-retract.

Solera by Lippert

Solera power awnings show up on newer RVs from Grand Design, Keystone, and Jayco. They use a different motor mount and controller design than Dometic or Carefree, but the diagnostic process is similar. We check voltage, test the board, and swap parts as needed. Solera motors have gotten more reliable in recent model years, but the early ones (2016-2019) had controller board issues.

How It Works

Three steps to a working electric awning.

1

Call and Describe the Symptoms

Call 772-280-3915 or request a quote online. Tell us what's happening: won't extend, won't retract, humming noise, stuck halfway. If you know the awning brand (look for a sticker on the end cap), that helps us bring the right replacement parts.

2

We Diagnose the Motor System

Our tech tests the motor, controller board, limit switches, and all wiring with a multimeter. We check for voltage at the motor terminals, test the switch assembly, and identify whether it's a motor failure, board issue, or wiring problem. Written estimate before we touch anything.

3

Repaired or Replaced On-Site

If it's a limit switch or wiring issue, we fix it on the spot. If the motor or controller board needs replacing, we swap it out at your location. We carry common Dometic and Carefree motors and boards on the truck. Most electric awning motor repairs are done in 1-2 hours.

Our Carefree Eclipse awning wind sensor quit working last hurricane season. Didn't even know it was broken until a squall blew through and the awning stayed out. Tech found a corroded connector at the sensor module, replaced it, and recalibrated the whole system. Works perfectly now.

Steve R.Fifth Wheel Owner, Jensen Beach
Thought we needed a whole new awning because the motor was grinding. Tech pulled the motor assembly, showed us the stripped gears inside, and replaced just the motor for less than half what the dealer quoted for a full awning replacement. Honest and fair.

FAQ

Electric awning motor questions we hear all the time.

How much does RV electric awning motor repair cost in Stuart?

RV electric awning motor repair in Stuart typically runs $150-600 depending on what's wrong. A limit switch replacement costs $150-250. A controller board swap runs $200-350. A full motor replacement runs $350-600 depending on the brand. We diagnose on-site and give you a written quote before any work starts.

Why won't my electric RV awning extend or retract?

Three most common causes: blown fuse or tripped breaker (check those first), a failed controller board that isn't sending power to the motor, or a burned-out motor. If you hear humming or clicking when you press the switch, the motor is getting power but can't turn. That usually means the motor is seized or the gearbox has stripped.

Can you repair an electric awning motor or does it need replacement?

It depends on the failure point. If limit switches are misadjusted or a relay on the controller board has failed, we can often repair it without replacing the whole motor. If the motor windings are burned out or the internal gearbox is stripped, replacement is the only option. We test everything before recommending a swap.

How long does it take to replace an RV awning motor?

A motor replacement takes 1-2 hours depending on the model and how accessible the motor housing is. Dometic 9100 motors are a fairly straightforward swap. Carefree Eclipse motors require removing the end cap assembly first. We do everything at your campsite, driveway, or storage lot in Stuart.

My electric awning stopped halfway. How do I manually close it?

Most electric awnings have a manual override. On Dometic models, there's a small slot on the roller tube for a crank handle. On Carefree models, the override is usually on the motor end cap. If you can't find it or it won't turn, call us and we'll walk you through it over the phone. If it's stuck out and a storm is coming, we offer emergency service calls.

What brands of electric awning motors do you work on?

We work on all major brands including Dometic (9100, 9200, WeatherPro), Carefree (Eclipse, Travel'r), and Solera by Lippert. Dometic and Carefree make up about 90% of the electric awnings we see in Stuart and across the Treasure Coast. We carry common replacement motors and controller boards on the truck for same-day repair when possible.
