Manual Awning Repair

Manual awnings take more abuse than electric ones. Here's why.

RV with manual awning extended at a campsite near Stuart Florida

Manual RV awnings rely on torsion springs, mechanical arms, and your own muscle to extend and retract. There are no motors, no circuit boards, no sensors. Just metal, springs, and rivets. And because there's no auto-retract feature, manual awnings get left out in weather that would trigger an electric awning to roll itself up. That's why we see more storm damage on manual units around Stuart and Jensen Beach.

The torsion spring inside the roller tube is the heart of the system. It provides the tension that keeps the fabric taut when extended and assists with retraction. When that spring weakens or breaks, everything goes sideways. The fabric sags, the crank becomes impossibly hard to turn, or the awning won't stay retracted and starts unrolling on its own during highway driving. We've had customers drive to a campground in Hobe Sound and find their awning half-unfurled when they arrived. Dangerous situation.

Beyond the spring, we see bent rafters from leaving the awning out in a storm, loose rivets from years of vibration during road travel, and corroded arm pivots that make extending the awning feel like you're cranking a rusted gate. All of these are fixable on-site without taking the awning to a shop.

Common Manual Awning Problems

6 manual awning issues we repair all the time in Stuart.

01

"The awning is incredibly hard to crank open"

Usually a weak torsion spring or corroded arm pivots. The spring provides the assist that makes cranking easy. When it loses tension, you're doing all the work yourself. And if the arm pivot bushings have corroded in the salt air near the Indian River, that adds even more friction. Spring re-tension or replacement plus pivot lubrication fixes this. $120-300.

02

"The awning fabric sags badly when it's open"

Fabric sag on a manual awning is almost always a spring tension problem. The spring isn't pulling the roller tube tight enough to keep the fabric taut. Sometimes we can re-tension the existing spring, but if it's been weak for a while, the spring has likely taken a permanent set and needs replacing. A new spring brings back that crisp, flat look when the awning is deployed.

03

"A rafter arm is bent from a wind gust"

Bent rafters are the #1 storm damage we see on manual awnings in Stuart. A gust catches the extended fabric, and the aluminum rafter takes the load and bends. Sometimes we can straighten it if the bend is minor. If it's kinked or cracked, we replace the rafter. Either way, it's something we handle on-site in under an hour per rafter.

04

"Rivets are popping out and things are rattling"

Road vibration loosens rivets over time. We see this especially on rigs that do a lot of highway miles. Loose rivets let the brackets shift, the arms wobble, and you start hearing rattling at speed. Left alone, a loose bracket can eventually pull free and cause real damage. Re-riveting is a cheap fix at $80-150 and prevents bigger problems.

05

"The awning won't lock in the open position"

The lock mechanism on the arm or the slider channel is worn or damaged. On Carefree awnings, the arm slider has a lock tab that clicks into position. On Dometic units, the arm rafter has a pivot lock. If these wear out, the awning drifts closed under its own weight. We replace the lock hardware, which is a 30-45 minute job at $80-150.

06

"The awning tried to unroll while driving"

A broken or weak torsion spring can let the awning slowly unwind from road vibration and wind pressure during highway driving. This is a safety issue. The travel lock latch might also be broken or not engaging properly. We see this at least once a month in our Stuart service area. If your awning has crept out even a few inches during travel, get the spring and travel lock checked immediately.

Brands We Repair

Dometic, Carefree, and older A&E manual awnings.

Manual awnings have been around for decades, so we see everything from brand new Dometic 8500s to vintage A&E units that are 20+ years old. Here's what we work on most in the Stuart area.

Dometic 8500 Manual Awning

The Dometic 8500 is the most common manual awning in RVs sold in the last 15 years. It uses a standard torsion spring inside the roller tube, with arm-style rafters that lock at full extension. Spring tension is adjustable through the end cap, and replacement springs are readily available. According to Dometic, these springs are rated for 10,000+ extend/retract cycles, but Florida heat can reduce that significantly.

Carefree Fiesta / Spirit Manual Awning

Carefree's manual awnings use a slightly different arm geometry than Dometic, with a slider channel system instead of pivot-lock arms. The Carefree Fiesta is their full-size model, and the Spirit is the compact version for smaller RVs. The slider channel is a common wear point since aluminum-on-aluminum contact creates friction and eventually binding.

A&E / Dometic Legacy Models

A&E (now part of Dometic) made manual awnings for decades before being acquired. Many RVs built in the 1990s and 2000s still have A&E Sunchaser and Weathershield models. Parts are still available through Dometic, and the spring and arm designs are similar enough that modern replacement parts often fit. We work on these older units regularly.

Solera by Lippert (Manual Models)

Lippert's Solera line includes some manual-crank models that show up on newer entry-level trailers. The spring design is similar to Dometic but uses a different end cap configuration. We've seen spring failures on some of the early Solera manual models (2017-2019 production years) where the spring tension was set too low from the factory.

Bent rafter after a sudden storm at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Called Stuart RV Repair and they came out the next morning with a replacement rafter. Had it installed in under an hour. We were able to continue our camping trip without any issues. Great service.

Had multiple rivets come loose on our older A&E awning. The arms were wobbling and making noise during travel. Tech re-riveted everything and also found a cracked bracket that was about to fail. Caught it before it turned into a bigger problem. Fair price and quality work.

FAQ

Manual awning repair questions we hear all the time.

How much does RV manual awning repair cost in Stuart?

RV manual awning repair in Stuart typically runs $120-450 depending on what's needed. A spring tension adjustment costs $120-180. Replacing a broken torsion spring runs $180-300. Rafter straightening or replacement is $150-250 per rafter. Re-riveting loose hardware runs $80-150. You'll always get a written estimate before any work starts.

Why is my manual RV awning so hard to crank out?

Two most common causes: a worn torsion spring that's lost its tension (so you're fighting more resistance) or corroded arm pivots from coastal humidity. In Stuart's salt air, pivot pins and bushings corrode and bind over time. Lubricating the pivots sometimes helps temporarily, but if the spring is weak, you'll need a spring replacement or tension adjustment.

Can you replace a broken awning torsion spring on-site?

Yes. We replace torsion springs on-site regularly. The spring lives inside the roller tube and requires removing the end caps and carefully unwinding the old spring before installing the new one. It's a job that requires specific tools and experience since those springs are under significant tension. We don't recommend trying this as a DIY project.

How do I know if my awning spring needs to be replaced?

Three signs: the awning is extremely hard to extend or retract, the fabric sags badly when open because there's not enough spring tension, or the awning won't stay retracted and starts creeping out on its own during travel. A fully broken spring is obvious because the crank handle spins freely with zero resistance.

How long do manual awning repairs take?

Most manual awning repairs take 1-2 hours on-site. A spring tension adjustment is about 45 minutes. A full spring replacement runs 1.5-2 hours. Rafter repair or replacement takes 45-90 minutes per rafter. Re-riveting loose hardware is usually 30-60 minutes depending on how many rivets need attention.

Should I switch from a manual awning to an electric one?

An electric conversion runs $800-1,500 installed, depending on brand and awning length. If your manual awning hardware is in good shape and just needs a spring or rivets, repairing it for $150-300 makes way more sense. If you're replacing the whole awning anyway and want the convenience of a button press, that's the time to consider upgrading.
